As coaches, many of us have heard clients say:
"My knees hurt. I think I should stop exercising."
For Franky, that was exactly how his story began.
Years of osteoarthritis slowly took away his mobility. Walking became painful. Standing for long periods made his knees swell, and even his posture changed as his body tried to compensate for the pain.
Eventually, he underwent a double knee replacement.
Like many people after surgery, Franky was afraid to move. Every step felt uncomfortable, and for the first month, he relied on a walking frame just to get around.
But recovery didn't end when he left the hospital. That's where exercise became part of the solution.
Working alongside a coach, Franky followed a structured exercise program that matched his stage of recovery. Instead of avoiding movement, he gradually rebuilt his strength, mobility, and confidence. Step by step, he returned to the activities that pain had once taken away.
Stories like Franky's remind us of something every coach should know
The goal isn't to help clients train harder. It's to help them move better.
As Hong Kong's population continues to age, more coaches will work with clients recovering from surgery, living with osteoarthritis, or managing chronic conditions. These clients require more than a standard workout plan. They need exercise that is tailored to their health, functional ability, and recovery goals.
That raises an important question:
Would you know how to coach someone like Franky?
At Activeway Health, we believe coaches can play an important role in helping people regain their independence through safe, targeted exercise.
